ASIA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Since 2009, the Asia Player of the Year (APOY) has been awarded each year to the best poker player on the Asia Poker Circuit. This is determined by the APOY Leaderboard where players gain points by participating in the premiere poker tournaments in Asia. Each year the winner has their name engraved into the permanent APOY trophy located at PokerStars Macau and becomes a part of poker history. The 2011 APOY season runs from January 21 to November 27 and the winner will be awarded a 1-Year Sponsorship with PokerStars Macau!

Asia Player of the Year Leaderboard - Scoring Criteria

There are three criteria when calculating points:

  1. Top Ten Finish

The final ten will receive points. Players receive points only if they are in the money. If a  tournament pays only five places, only the top five players get points.

  1. Amount of the buy-in
  2. Number of entrants

Total points are calculated by multiplying the point factors of the three criteria:

Place finished:

Place Points Awarded
1st 120
2nd 100
3rd 80
4th 60
5th 50
6th 40
7th 35
8th 30
9th 25
10th 20

Buy-ins

Buy-in (HKD) Points Awarded
$50,000 or more 5 points
$20,000-49,999 3.5 points
$10,000-19,999 3 points
$5000-9,999 2.5 points
$2,000-4,999 2 points
$1,000-1,999 1.5 points
Under $1,000 1 point

The buy-in in rebuy tournaments are calculated by dividing the total gross prize pool by the number of entrants.

Number of entrants:

Number of entrants Points Awarded
Under 50 1 point
50-99 2 points
100-149 3 points
150-199 4 points

Every 10 additional number of entrants increases the number of points by 0.1, with the number of entrants rounded to the nearest 10. The Maximum points awarded for Entrants factor is 8.

Here is a hypothetical total point calculation example:

You finished in 3rd place in a $1,000 buy-in event that had 120 entrants.

You receive 80 points for 3rd; the buy-in is $1,000, which is a 1.5-point event; and there are 120 entrants, which is good for 3 points.

Thus, you receive 360 total points (80 x 1.5 x 3= 360).

Note: PokerStars Macau reserves the right to change the Asia Player of the Year schedule and criteria at their discretion.
